DESCRIPTION:Invitation Bookshop welcomes Ansley Clark and Kathleen Byrd\, who will teach a free poetry workshop from 2-3:30p followed by a reading from their own poetry collections from 4-5p. RSVP required for the workshop as space is limited. \nABOUT THE WORKSHOP: \nInherited Objects: A Writing Workshop This 90-minute writing workshop with poets Kathleen Byrd and Ansley Clark focuses on the theme of inherited objects\, family stories\, and ancestors. Kathleen and Ansley will offer examples of poems about inheritance along with writing prompts\, and participants will have time to write and share their work. You are invited to bring an inherited object for reflection\, but this is not required\, and the workshoppers will also provide a few objects for you to use while writing. This workshop is open to all–no experience necessary. \nABOUT THE AUTHORS: \nKathleen Byrd  \nI’m a writer\, teacher\, and poet living in Olympia\, Washington. I love helping people gain an appreciation of poetry and guiding people to find the poet within. I believe we all have deep inclinations toward poetry. This comes through our play with language such as figures of speech\, rhyme\, and rhythm. Poetry helps us feel and express the ineffable of shared human experience. It is sensory and mysterious but also accessible to all. I lead workshops in reading and writing poetry and love to collaborate with other writers and artists. I teach writing at SPSCC and am serving as the 4th poet laureate of Olympia\, Washington through July of 2025. My first collection of poems\, Last Resort\, was recently published by Last Word Books in Olympia\, WA. \nAnsley Clark \nAnsley is a writer and teacher from the Pacific Northwest. She is the author of Bloodline (MoonPath Press 2024)\, and the chapbook Geography (Dancing Girl Press 2015). Her poems and essays have appeared in Poetry Northwest\, Colorado Review\, Bennington Review\, and elsewhere. She received her Master of Fine Arts in Poetry from the University of Colorado Boulder in 2016. She currently is the director of the Writing Center at The Evergreen State College and lives in Olympia\, Washington with her dog.

SUMMARY:Learn to Bake Sourdough
DESCRIPTION:Learn the art of baking delicious sourdough bread in this hands-on workshop. Baking bread is both science and craft and you’ll learn the secrets to creating warm\, crusty loaves that will impress your friends and family. This workshop will cover creating and nurturing a sourdough starter\, tools\, ingredients\, prep\, baking and troubleshooting. During the workshop\, we will bake and eat a loaf that’s been prepared the previous day\, while starting your own dough to take and bake at home the following day. You’ll go home with a starter kit including a glass jar with our well developed starter\, a proofing basket\, a dough whisk\, plastic dough scraper\, a razor for scoring\, written instructions and recipes\, plus the dough you made in class. \nPlease bring the following supplies to class: 1) a large mixing bowl 2) a kitchen towel 3) an apron (optional). We will have spatulas\, scales\, measuring cups\, etc. for class \nAt home\, you will need a dutch oven or roasting pan with lid that can bake to 450 degrees.

SUMMARY:Women on Board: Stories from Trailblazing Fisherwomen
DESCRIPTION:Until the 1970s\, women on board fishing boats were virtually unheard of. Superstitions held that women brought bad luck\, caused unrest among the crew\, and were generally not capable of working the long days on board. A handful of young Gig Harbor women changed all that. Some worked their fathers’ boats\, others worked alongside their husbands. Still others broke the mold and ran their own boats. The Shenandoah at the Harbor History Museum was one boat where women defied superstition and worked on board\, but it wasn’t always easy.\nJoin us for a lively discussion with three Gig Harbor women fishers who were the ground breakers of their time. Bunky Janovich crewed on board the Shenandoah. Laurie Dahl Isacson worked as cook and crew on the Pacific Maid\, and Debbi Ross worked on both a purse seiner and a halibut long liner. SUMMARY:Beach Monitoring & Molt Search
DESCRIPTION:Beach Monitoring is one of Harbor WildWatch’s signature Participatory Science Programs where twice a year (summer & winter)\, we collect data from different beaches throughout the South Sound area. This information helps us determine how the beaches change over time and could be useful in determining the impact of a future natural or human induced event.\nWe meet in the parking area of the beach around the scheduled time to organize gear before heading out to our monitoring site (Usually 10-15min past the scheduled start time). See below for more detailed directions about the monitoring location. Participation with these special participatory science events gets you\, your friends\, and family directly involved with the protection of our local beaches and who knows\, may even inspire future ecologists. Mark your calendar for any or all of these upcoming events. Remember\, you don’t have to have a science background to participate\, nor are you required to stay for the entire duration of the typically 3-4 hour program. All ages welcome.\nFor Summer Beach Monitoring we recommend that you are prepared with layers (it does tend to be cold at the beach)\, sun protection\, snacks\, hydration\, and closed toed shoes (rain boots\, water shoes\, or old sneakers you don’t mind getting wet work great). Some folks like having a light pair of rain pants for keeping dry when we kneel on the beach but that’s not required.\nThese events will include a training on how to conduct a MOLT SEARCH. This is a program that you can participate in to be part of an early detection program monitoring for European green crab. Early detection of the presence of European green crab will give managers the best chance of reducing the spread and impact of this globally damaging invasive species. We’re excited to have you be part of the team: wsg.washington.edu/moltsearch\nOld Ferry Landing at the Mouth of Gig Harbor: There is very little parking at this location\, so I recommend the angle in\, public parking on Harborview Drive past the Soundview Drive intersection (near Tides Tavern). The Old Ferry Landing is a short walk to the end of Harborview Drive. We will meet at the top of the viewing platform at the scheduled start time. If you arrive later\, Please use caution on the path to the beach. Once you reach the beach\, the monitoring site is to the left (facing the water) – It’s a small beach\, ya can’t miss us!\nComment on the event or contact Stena@harborwildwatch.org for information prior to the event.

Washington Sea Grant and Washington State University Extension’s Molt Search is a volunteer-based program which complements WSG Crab Team’s monitoring network and broader state-wide green crab management efforts. Learn how this collaborative approach strengthens early detection\, enhances ecological resilience\, and how you can get involved in protecting our marine ecosystems.\n\nElyse Kelsey is a second-year graduate student in the School of Marine and Environmental Affairs at the University of Washington and is pursuing a graduate certificate in climate change and public health. She currently works as a student assistant for the Washington Sea Grant Crab Team\, supporting their European green crab early detection and long-term ecological monitoring program. After graduation\, she hopes to work to address the needs of Washington’s coastal communities on a range of natural hazards and climate issues that pose environmental and human health risks.\n\nFor those attending in person\, the doors open at 5:30pm and the presentation will begin at 6pm.
