SUMMARY:Beach Monitoring & Molt Search – Penrose Point State Park
DESCRIPTION:Beach Monitoring is one of Harbor WildWatch’s signature Participatory Science Programs where twice a year (summer & winter)\, we collect data from different beaches throughout the South Sound area. This information helps us determine how the beaches change over time and could be useful in determining the impact of a future natural or human induced event. \nWe meet in the parking area of the beach around the scheduled time to organize gear before heading out to our monitoring site (Usually 10-15min past the scheduled start time). See below for more detailed directions about the monitoring location. Participation with these special participatory science events gets you\, your friends\, and family directly involved with the protection of our local beaches and who knows\, may even inspire future ecologists. Mark your calendar for any or all of these upcoming events. Remember\, you don’t have to have a science background to participate\, nor are you required to stay for the entire duration of the typically 3-4 hour program. All ages welcome. \nThese beach monitoring events will include the hands on portion of how to conduct a MOLT SEARCH (about 2.5 hours past the event start time). This is a program that you can participate in to be part of an early detection program monitoring for European green crab. Early detection of the presence of European green crab will give managers the best chance of reducing the spread and impact of this globally damaging invasive species. We’re excited to have you be part of the team: wsg.washington.edu/moltsearch \nFor Summer Beach Monitoring we recommend that you are prepared with layers (it does tend to be cold at the beach)\, sun protection\, snacks\, hydration\, and closed toed shoes (rain boots\, water shoes\, or old sneakers you don’t mind getting wet work great). Some folks like having a light pair of rain pants for keeping dry when we kneel on the beach but that’s not required. \nPenrose Point State Park: Discover Pass Required. Once you pass the first gate to the park\, take a right at the “T” in the road. This will lead you to the general parking area where we will meet at the scheduled start time. If you arrive later\, walk across the grassy field and our monitoring site is on the beach to the left (you will likely have to walk around the picnic point to see us). \nContact Stena@harborwildwatch.org for information prior to the event.

SUMMARY:Low Tide Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join Harbor WildWatch for a fun and educational public beach walk program on the stunning shorelines of the Salish Sea. Our knowledgeable and friendly biologists and volunteer naturalists will guide you through a hands-on exploration of the intertidal zone\, where you will discover the incredible diversity of marine life that calls our local waters home. \nDuring the program\, you’ll learn good beach etiquette and get the chance to touch and examine creatures such as sea stars\, crabs\, and sea anemones\, while learning about their unique adaptations and behaviors. You’ll also hear about the challenges facing our ocean ecosystems\, and what you can do to help protect them. \nThis beach walk program is suitable for all ages and skill levels\, and is perfect for families\, school groups\, or anyone with an interest in the natural world. Whether you’re a seasoned beachcomber or a first-time visitor\, Harbor WildWatch’s beach walk program is sure to leave you with a newfound appreciation for the beauty and complexity of our local marine environment. \nOur programs run in all weather\, so please dress appropriately. We recommend closed-toe shoes for safety – rain boots\, water shoes\, or an old pair of sneakers you don’t mind getting a little wet and muddy work great. Bring a water bottle\, sunscreen\, layers\, and a snack if you think you will need it. Each beach walk will last approximately 60-90 minutes but you are welcome to peel off at any time before the beach walk concludes. Harbor WildWatch programs are always free\, but a suggested donation of $2 per person or $5 family is appreciated. \nSunrise Beach Park Logistics:\nGetting to the Beach: Park in the lot\, making sure not to block other cars or private property. Meet on the lawn near the parking area at the top of the hill at the scheduled time. Look for Harbor WildWatch staff and volunteers wearing blue. If you arrive late\, find us on the beach!\nTerrain: A steeply sloping grass hill leads down to the short trail to the beach. DESCRIPTION:Join Harbor WildWatch for a fun Science Saturday activity at the Marine Life Center! \nOne Saturday every month\, Harbor WildWatch will be hosting a different science based activity for kids to get the opportunity of hands on learning! Immerse all ages in awe-inspiring exploration with an activity led by one of our naturalists. This month\, junior scientists will be helping with an experiment gone wrong! Help our biologists unscramble colorful water samples while learning all about estuaries. \nScience Saturdays are FREE with no RSVP required\, however space is limited. If you would like to donate to help keep our programs free of charge\, we will have a donation jar for cash or checks\, or you can also use venmo or card. Duration is 30 minutes-1 hour\, depending on activity. Meet in Skansie Brother’s Park\, underneath the pavilion. \n*This is not a drop-off program. DESCRIPTION:Join us for an underwater adventure where you stay dry (or at least not salty) on the dock as our divers team up with an underwater ROV to live stream exactly what they encounter below the surface. Staff biologists and trained volunteers will identify the sea life that appears on the silver screen and share information about the incredible life that calls the Salish Sea home. Animals we have encountered at past events include: Feather-duster tube worms; sculpin\, and gunnels; red rock\, kelp and graceful crabs; various nudibranch species; giant Pacific octopus\, and much more. Each show is one of a kind\, so come on down to the dock and see what we find and learn more about what you can do to protect the Puget Sound.\n\nWe are thrilled to be partnering with 7Seas Brewing to bring Pier Into the Night to their dock – and keep you warm and undercover in their incredible downstairs space. Our knowledgeable and friendly biologists and volunteer naturalists will guide you through a hands-on exploration of the intertidal zone\, where you will discover the incredible diversity of marine life that calls our local waters home.\nDuring the program\, you’ll learn good beach etiquette and get the chance to touch and examine creatures such as sea stars\, crabs\, and sea anemones\, while learning about their unique adaptations and behaviors. You’ll also hear about the challenges facing our ocean ecosystems\, and what you can do to help protect them.\nThis beach walk program is suitable for all ages and skill levels\, and is perfect for families\, school groups\, or anyone with an interest in the natural world. Whether you’re a seasoned beachcomber or a first-time visitor\, Harbor WildWatch’s beach walk program is sure to leave you with a newfound appreciation for the beauty and complexity of our local marine environment.\nOur programs run in all weather\, so please dress appropriately. We recommend closed-toe shoes for safety – rain boots\, water shoes\, or an old pair of sneakers you don’t mind getting a little wet and muddy work great. Bring a water bottle\, sunscreen\, layers\, and a snack if you think you will need it. Each beach walk will last approximately 60-90 minutes but you are welcome to peel off at any time before the beach walk concludes. Harbor WildWatch programs are always free\, but a suggested donation of $2 per person or $5 family is appreciated.\nPenrose Point State Park:\nDiscover Pass Required: $30 per year or $10 per day\, available online at https://discoverpass.wa.gov/ or at pay stations at the park.\nGetting to the Beach: Once you pass the first gate into the park\, you will take a right at the “T” in the road. This will lead you to the general parking area (don’t forget to display your Discover Pass). We will meet on the lawn near the restroom at the scheduled start time. Look for Harbor WildWatch staff and volunteers wearing blue. If you arrive late\, find us on the beach!\nTerrain: There is a sloped sandy path or a short step down the eroding bank to the beach. This is a low sloping beach with cobble\, gravel\, sand\, mud\, and occasional boulders. There is a compact sandy stretch exposed at low tide that leads to an area of hard clay. DESCRIPTION:Invitation Bookshop welcomes Ansley Clark and Kathleen Byrd\, who will teach a free poetry workshop from 2-3:30p followed by a reading from their own poetry collections from 4-5p. RSVP required for the workshop as space is limited. \nABOUT THE WORKSHOP: \nInherited Objects: A Writing Workshop This 90-minute writing workshop with poets Kathleen Byrd and Ansley Clark focuses on the theme of inherited objects\, family stories\, and ancestors. Kathleen and Ansley will offer examples of poems about inheritance along with writing prompts\, and participants will have time to write and share their work. You are invited to bring an inherited object for reflection\, but this is not required\, and the workshoppers will also provide a few objects for you to use while writing. This workshop is open to all–no experience necessary. \nABOUT THE AUTHORS: \nKathleen Byrd  \nI’m a writer\, teacher\, and poet living in Olympia\, Washington. I love helping people gain an appreciation of poetry and guiding people to find the poet within. I believe we all have deep inclinations toward poetry. This comes through our play with language such as figures of speech\, rhyme\, and rhythm. Poetry helps us feel and express the ineffable of shared human experience. It is sensory and mysterious but also accessible to all. I lead workshops in reading and writing poetry and love to collaborate with other writers and artists. I teach writing at SPSCC and am serving as the 4th poet laureate of Olympia\, Washington through July of 2025. My first collection of poems\, Last Resort\, was recently published by Last Word Books in Olympia\, WA. \nAnsley Clark \nAnsley is a writer and teacher from the Pacific Northwest. She is the author of Bloodline (MoonPath Press 2024)\, and the chapbook Geography (Dancing Girl Press 2015). Her poems and essays have appeared in Poetry Northwest\, Colorado Review\, Bennington Review\, and elsewhere. She received her Master of Fine Arts in Poetry from the University of Colorado Boulder in 2016. She currently is the director of the Writing Center at The Evergreen State College and lives in Olympia\, Washington with her dog.

DESCRIPTION:Learn the art of baking delicious sourdough bread in this hands-on workshop. Baking bread is both science and craft and you’ll learn the secrets to creating warm\, crusty loaves that will impress your friends and family. This workshop will cover creating and nurturing a sourdough starter\, tools\, ingredients\, prep\, baking and troubleshooting. During the workshop\, we will bake and eat a loaf that’s been prepared the previous day\, while starting your own dough to take and bake at home the following day. You’ll go home with a starter kit including a glass jar with our well developed starter\, a proofing basket\, a dough whisk\, plastic dough scraper\, a razor for scoring\, written instructions and recipes\, plus the dough you made in class. \nPlease bring the following supplies to class: 1) a large mixing bowl 2) a kitchen towel 3) an apron (optional). We will have spatulas\, scales\, measuring cups\, etc. for class \nAt home\, you will need a dutch oven or roasting pan with lid that can bake to 450 degrees.
